from Atlin, British Columbia, Canada
We had just
finished our 120 mile ski trip across the Juneau Icefield. A boat
came at sunrise to take us from our final campsite across Lake
Atlin to the town of Atlin, BC.
The small old gold boom-town-
turned-picturesque-fishing-community had beer. Strong beer.
Molson XXX.
After my first
shower in 50 days, we took our beer to the shore, tied them down
in the water and spent a wonderfull afternoon sunning and
funning.
On the way back
for dinner, I wandered off and nearly tripped over this
serpentine hump on the shore line. Low and behold, nice
slickenlines! I whipped out my hammer and commenced to nocking
and prying, prying and nocking, twisting and contorting my body
to free this rock.
I soon realized that
the tide was rushing in...the water was soon up to mid-shin, and
working underwater did not make this sucker any easier to
break off. Pulling, and pushing, and...oops, gashed open the ole'
hand.
So now that it had
shed my blood, I new I wouldn't let this one get away... Finally
after much convincing and water up to my knees, I freed it from
60 million years of tectonic torture and lived to tell about.
